Artist Bio

Over the past two years I have focused more on making pottery than sculptures.  It is a shift in my work brought on by the changes in my personal life with small children and hectic schedules.  I am fully enjoying this new adventure and over the past year I have brought my love for printmaking into the studio.  I focus on pit fired stoneware as well as functional stoneware works. The pit fired work is a fun experience as there is little control of what happens during the final firing to the surface.  I enjoy this process as it brings a surprise every time. When making works for the pit I am careful to make solely decorative forms as this medium does not fire high enough to make the wares food safe.  With these decorative forms I challenge myself to create larger more complicated works. After the works are leather hard I burnish the surface, which is a long process, then I pre-fire to a cone 010. I usually perform two pit fires a year and build up enough work to have a good load during those firings.  My other focus is on functional wares and I have been enjoying using colored slips, which I make myself. I have recently incorporated using natural materials, like leaves, feathers, flowers, etc in my work to add another level. I also like carving through the slip, sgraffito, to create unique designs. I am constantly trying new things and hope you enjoy seeing what I have created.

  1. Visited Alex’s BNI chapter this morning and Dom gave a beautiful testimonial about your work. Really nice portfolio, loved the exposed line! If you ever launch a SM page for your work, please send me the link so I can share… I love putting awesome work like this out into the ether for fellow creatives. – Tara, North Star Design Studio.
